Addis Ababa January 06/2018 Leaders of Christian churches in Ethiopia have called on believers to celebrate the Ethiopian Christmas that falls tomorrow remembering the value of peace, unity and fraternal love.
In a message he delivered to believers of the Ethiopian Coptic Orthodox Church, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church His Holiness Abuna Matiyas the First said the faithful should celebrate Ethiopian Christmas,Genna, by giving due importance to the prevalence of peace in the country and marking the occasion in a spirit of unity and love.
Peace is the basis for all good things that occur in this world, and the whole world should safeguard the grace that is vested in the maintenance of peace, the Patriarch added.
According to him, peace is one of the important heavenly messages in the religious teachings of the Church.The significance of peace lies not only in our daily earthly encounters but also plays important role in our relationship with our creator, he noted.
Abuna Matiyas further stated that Christians should celebrate the occasion through charitable activities by assisting the poor and needy compatriots.
In his benediction to Christians celebrating Christmas, Ethiopian Catholic Church Archbishop His Holiness Cardinal Brehaneysus Surafel stressed on the need to sustain and cherish the age-old values and assets of peace, love and unity in the country.
The Cardinal called on all Ethiopians to support compatriots that are internally displaced due to the recent conflicts in some parts of the country.
Archbishop Brehaneysus also urged religious leaders and the government to effectively contribute to the promotion of peace in the country.
President of the Ethiopian MekaneYesus Evangelical Church, Reverend Yonas Yigezu also delivered a Christmas message in which he underscored the importance of safeguarding national unity and identity, and striving to resolve misunderstandings and conflicts in a peaceful manner.
Reverend Yonas said the government has to further speed up its in ensuring sustained peace and tranquility in the country.
