Addis Ababa December 25/2017 Ministry of Health announced its plan to open five specialized cancer treatment centers across the country.
Non-communicable Diseases Team Leader, Dr. Bisrat Dessalegn at the Ministry told ENA that the construction of the centers has been underway in Hawassa, Mekelle, Jimma, Gondar, and Haramaya.
The government has allocated 80 million USD budget for construction and medical equipment, he added.
Cancer, which was a problem of the developed countries, has now become a serious health problem in developing countries.
Although the disease has also been attacking cross sections of the society in Ethiopia, cancer treatment is only given at the Black Lion Specialized Hospital, Dr. Bisrat revealed.
The centers will become operational in September 2018, he stated.
The expansion of similar centers to other parts of the country will be given due consideration by taking the gravity of the problem in the localities, it was learned.
According to World Health Organization Cancer, nearly 1 in 6 deaths globally is due to cancer.
