President Discusses with IFRC Delegation Featured

Addis Ababa October 10/2017 President Mulatu Teshome discussed with the delegation of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The discussion was focused on Ethiopia’s response to the drought and the performance of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society.

During the discussion President Mulatu briefed the delegation drawn from more than seven donor countries about the activities of the government in terms of supporting drought affected people.

The President, who is patron of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, has also discussed the performance of the Society, the challenges it faced and its future activities with the delegation.

In this regard, President Teshome urged the Federation to extend the necessary support for the Ethiopian Red Cross Society in order to enhance its capability, according to Ashebir Getnet, Communication Director at the president’s office.

Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, Under Secretary General for Partnerships at the IFRC told ENA that the delegation came to Ethiopia to evaluate the performance of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, and to analyze the recent impacts of the drought in Afar Regional State.

She lauded the Society's efforts in drought response and affirmed IFRC's commitment to work in collaboration with ERCS.

Dr Ahmed Reja, Board President of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society, stated that the Society has undertaken a tremendous work in drought response particularly in the Afar regional state.

He said ERCS has reached agreement with the IFRC to work closely on drought prevention mechanisms.

It is expected that the delegation will have a visit to drought affected areas and evaluate the actual performance of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society.
