Addis Ababa October 09/2017 Ethiopia is preparing to mark the breast cancer awareness months through awareness raising activities, the Ministry of Health said.
As most of deaths related to breast cancer occur because of lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services, the government will enhance its engagement in awareness creation activities, said Yifru Birhane (Professor).
“Lack of awareness about breast cancer and its prevalence mechanisms and shortage of institutions that can provide diagnosis and treatment has become the leading factors for women’s death from breast cancer in Ethiopia,” he said.
Since cancer is highly related with people’s life-style, creating awareness on the disease and its prevention mechanisms plays a key role in decreasing vulnerability, he added.
Breast cancer is one of the deadly non-communicable diseases, causing more than 7,000 deaths in Ethiopia, said First lady Roman Tesfaye. Every year, there is close to 13,000 new cases in Ethiopia.
Since lack of awareness is the major cause for the deaths related to cancer, Roman urged the importance to work on it to change the scenario.
The Breast Cancer Awareness Month, marked in countries across the world every October, to help increase attention and support for awareness, early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of the disease.
Since there is not sufficient knowledge on the causes of breast cancer, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of its control.
Accordingly, Ethiopia commemorates the month of October through enhanced awareness raising activities on the importance of early detection.
