Addis Ababa September 06/2017 The government of China has pledged humanitarian relief assistance worth 15 million USD to Ethiopia, according to the Embassy of China.
Minister of Finance and Economic Cooperation, Dr. Abraham Tekeste and Mr. Liu Tao, Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of China in Ethiopia signed USD 15 million worth food-aid agreement expected to be delivered to drought-stricken victims shortly.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Liu referred to the long-standing bilateral relations between Ethiopia and China and added that the relief aid was meant to help tackle food security threats that have emerged in 2017 and is ready to extend further helping hands when necessary.
"With a view to fulfilling its time-honored traditional friendship with Ethiopia, the Chinese Government has been standing side by side with the Ethiopian Government and people ever since the onset of this round of climate disasters", the press release of the embassy stated.
Furthermore the release added that in May 2017, during PM Hailemariam Dessalegn’s attendance at the Belt and Road Summit Forum for International Cooperation in Beijing, leaders of both countries announced to upgrade bilateral relations to Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership
The release also indicated that Vice Minister of Commerce of China, Mr. Qian Keming expressed profound concern for the situation in Ethiopia during his visit to Ethiopia and signed a food aid agreement under which 10,535 tons of wheat was delivered to Ethiopia in April 2016. In the same year, in a bid to help further relieve the crisis, the Chinese Government donated USD 8 million to World Food Program, providing emergency humanitarian food assistance to the Ethiopian people.
