Ethiopia Pledges to Further Strengthen Support to Refugees Featured

Addis Ababa June 21, 2017 Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn has reaffirmed today Ethiopia’s continued commitment to further strengthen its support for refugees.

PM Hailemariam held talks with Filippo Grandi, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, on refugees, peace and stability in the region.

The Premier appreciated the fact Ethiopia’s contribution for dignified treatment of refugees and to stabilize refugees crisis is internationally acknowledged at a time when rich countries are not contributing enough to alleviate the refugee crisis that has occurred across the world.

According to Hailemariam, Ethiopia has been playing great role in hosting refugees for long period; thus being one the oldest refugee hosting nations in the world. The country is hosting over 850,000 refugees.

UNHCR Commissioner Filippo Grandi said “I was very pleased and honored to have the opportunity to discuss the refugee situation in Ethiopia and in the region with the Prime Minister.”

Commissioner Filippo Grandi stated that “I made it a point to come to Ethiopia to recognize for the whole world that Ethiopia is a very generous host to hundreds of thousands of refugees and is also a country and government promoting very forward looking policies to host refugees and to support both communities.”

The officials have discussed the need to continue supporting the people fleeing while at the same time intensifying efforts to find peace in the countries concerned, he added.

The Commissioner finally said “I wish to take this opportunity to thank once more Ethiopia for its exceptional support to refugees and its strong partnership with UNHCR.”
