Addis Ababa May 12, 2017 Ethiopia and Italy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that enables Ethiopians to receive training on pediatric health surgery and vocational education and training of health care personnel during the next five years.
Minister of Health Yifru Birhane appreciated on the occasion the assistance extended by Italy to strengthen the skills and competence of health care personnel in Ethiopia.
“Pediatric cardiac surgery is an untouched health problem in Ethiopia”, the Minister said, adding that over 400,000 children are waiting for cardiac surgery in Ethiopia.
The memorandum will promote cooperation in pediatric health surgery and training of health care personnel, it was learned.
Italy’s Ambassador of to Ethiopia, Giuseppe Mistretta, said “the signature of this memorandum strengthens the ongoing collaborations between Italy and Ethiopia, specifically in the field of capacity building and human resources development”.
The ambassador noted that this is a great connection between the ministries of health of Ethiopia and Italy, which is part of the inclusive cooperation.
Coordinator of the Health Sector of Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, Dr. Laura Pecoraro, said “specialized training events and other relevant activities will be organized in the future guided by the principles of equality, gender parity, reciprocity and mutual benefit”.
She said all the activities in this MoU are aimed at increasing and improving the quality of health professionals and consequently the quality of curative health services in Ethiopia.
According to her, Italy has been supporting the development and implementation of the national five years Health Sector Transformation Plan (HSTP) of Ethiopia.
