Addis Ababa February 23/2016 Preparations are made to engage citizens living in drought affected parts of the country in development, according to Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn.
The drought cannot be a continuing threat as activities will be undertaken with full capacity by utilizing the regular rain of the coming winter season, he added.
At a press conference he gave here today, the premier stated that the government will intensify its fight to withstand the drought.
Some 10.2 million people are currently in need of assistance.
The drought has not turned into famine as the government was quick in providing food supply, the PM noted.
As a result, no single human life was lost and the support will continue, he said, adding that the drought is now under control.
Beyond this, the government has designed a sustainable development plan that would mobilize citizens living in the drought affected areas to development activities; and the plan is under implementation, according to Hailemariam.
The regular rainfall forecast for the belg and kiremt in most parts of the country are the basis for the plan, he elaborated.
The government will provide additional food for residents who live in drought affected areas till they start farming activities, it was indicated.
The premier stressed that in the future efforts will be exerted to boost agriculture in addition to preventing drought.
