Addis Ababa Feburary 17/2018 Foreign Minister Workneh Gebeyehu had discussion with US Congress members and Ethiopia Caucus members in the Congress about bilateral issues and the role Ethiopia plays in the region.
The Minister said on the occasion, Ethiopia is desirous to work with the US in trade and investment, peace and stability as well as in the fight against terrorism.
He also told the representatives in Washington that Ethiopia is among the countries that have been registering rapid economic growth during the past years.
''Ethiopia has embarked upon registering double-digit growth during the last 14 years. As a result, it has succeeded in being one of the countries with fast economic growth in the world'', Workneh noted.
With respect to keeping peace and nurturing democratic culture, the country has been playing a big role in maintaining peace in the region.
However, the government is working to respond to the demands of the society that have recently triggered instability in the country, the Minister explained to the Congress members.
In negotiations conducted with opposition parties, the government has agreed to make amendments to the electoral laws, according to Workneh.
To address public grievances, it is working to improve the way courts function.
Foreign Minister Workneh also stated that political leaders and prisoners have been released.
Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Meles Alem said on his part the discussion was fruitful.
He stated that "the discussion was very successful. Understanding was reached to further consolidate the bilateral relation of Ethiopia and USA, and it was stated that USA will give attention to its all-round relation with Ethiopia. Moreover the indispensable role of Ethiopia in this region and the need to work in collaboration for peace and stability in the Horn of Africa was emphasized."
