In a speech he delivered in support of Dr. Tedros Adhanom, Representative of the associations and societies, Dr. Gemechis Mamo said “we have the great fortune to be a part of Dr. Tedros’s efforts to reform healthcare in Ethiopia, working in close partnership with the Ministry of Health – and we have watched as he has taken that commitment global.”
Having experienced leadership, tenacity, technical and diplomatic skills as well as humility, Dr. Gemechis said the candidate “we know will have a similar impact at the World Health Organization.”
In line with some of his accomplishments during his tenure as Minister of Health from 2005-2012, Dr. Tedros has positively impacted all of the medical professions, he added.
The candidate has also invested in the creation of 3,500 health centers and 16,000 health posts to improve access to basic health care across the country.
Dr. Tedros prioritized also training and skill building, leading to seven-fold increase in the number of health professionals from 16,500 to 115,000.
According to the representative, Dr. Tedros was instrumental in the African Union (AU)’s response to Ebola epidemic helping to shift the focus towards greater country ownership and to create a platform for countries to engage.
He has the hands on experiences of transforming a health system at home, reforming global health organizations internationally and building consensus among the countries, Dr. Gemechis noted.
“We believe that Dr. Tedros will bring a fresh perspective to WHO!” he concluded.
