Oromia State Stepping up Anti-Corruption Struggle, Jails over 90 Individuals Featured

Addis Ababa May 16/2017 In its vigorous crackdown against corruption, Oromia Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission said it has brought to justice 600 individuals of which 93 were jailed from 6 months to thirteen years during the past nine months.

Among these include 3 town mayors who were sentenced to rigorous imprisonment.

The Commission has also succeeded in confiscating more than 105 million birr and 96,200 square meters of land illegally owned by leaders and implementers at various levels in state.

The commission has been carrying various activities in corruption affected identified sectors.

Oromia Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission stated that it has been implementing the Integrated Corruption-Prevention Strategy of the regional state.

While briefing local journalists today, Commissioner Hirut Biraasa said 30.6 million birr was also prevented from being embezzled.

Some 7 million birr, 230,219 square meters of land, 40 condominiums and 6 vehicles were frozen, she added.

According to the Commissioner, the state will conduct a week-long public forum starting from tomorrow to create awareness among the public so as to step up the anti-corruption struggle.

Yet, she said, the participation of the public in the anti-corruption struggle is growing.
