Addis Ababa November 16/2017 Ethiopia says it has the capacity to complete the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, being built along the Nile without external assistance.

The Horn African nation launched the construction of the grand dam with abn installed capacity of 6,450MW power in April 2011 to fully finance itself by mobilizing domestic resources.

Since then the country has been raising funds in many ways including donation from the public and domestic companies, lottery and other activities.

Mentioning some media reports about getting funds from Qatar for the project, Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn said his country has no intention to receive any assistance from foreign sources for this particular project.

He said the stance of Ethiopia in relation to funding of the mega project - completing it with domestic sources - will not be compromised.

Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn who officially visited Qatar for three days denounced that his visit to Qatar doesn’t connect with the Grand Dam rather it is intended to discuss other cooperation areas.

Noting that there is a trend among some media outlets to attach Ethiopia’s diplomatic ties and visits with the Grand Dam, Hailemariam said it is a mistake.

Saying that Ethiopia will continue to develop its resources to stimulate its development, Hailemariam asserted that it has no intention of harming others.

“In any ways we will not do anything that will harm the downstream countries” the Premier asserted.

He noted the efforts of some forces to assert that Ethiopia would not complete the construction of the dam by itself; the Premier said the construction of the dam will be completed without external assistance.
