Addis Ababa September 13/2017 Ethiopia and France have signed today a 70.5 loan and grant agreement to support the relocation and expansion of Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise.

The agreement was signed by Finance and Economic Cooperation State Minister Admasu Nebebe and France's Ambassador to Ethiopia Frederic Bontems.

Speaking at the ceremony, State Minister Admasu said the agreement aims at providing standard abattoirs service for both local and international markets by relocating and modernizing Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise.

“The credit and grant agreement which we signed is part of our commitment to strengthen our partnership especially in building a modern city infrastructure and service to the residents”, the State Minister added.

Ambassador Bontems on his part said the construction of new abattoirs for Addis Ababa has been found compulsory as the city has experienced a rapid growth in the last years.

He noted that the exciting abattoirs are insufficient capacity as compared with the demand and quality and environmental challenges.

In this regard, the construction of modern abattoirs is one of the key objectives of Addis Ababa Municipality during GTP-II and the major request made by the municipality to France Development Agency (AFD).

The project will be implemented from 2017 to 2022 and is expected to double its capacity to 810,000 animals slaughtered every year which should represent more than 60 percent of the meat consumed in the city from official slaughter, it was learned.

The70 million Euros will be consumed for the relocation and expansion in concessional loan and 0.5 million Euros in grant for technical assistance.
