Addis Ababa March 16/2017 More than 52 million Birr was secured from one of the fundraising programs organized in connection with the sixth anniversary of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, Office of National Council for Coordination of Public Participation on Construction of GERD said.
PR and Communications Head at the Office, Hailu Abreham told ENA that 52.2 million Birr was secured from the bond sold between 27 February and 8 March across the country.
The bonds were sold across the nation through banks and tents established for this purpose, he added.
According to the Head, the bond sell in the regional states of Afar, Benishangul-Gumuz and Ethiopian Somali is being held because of late commencement of the program.
Despite the delay in the commencement of the event because of challenges related to human power and organizational issues, the program is well underway in the regional states, he added.
The country has set plan to raise 1.8 billion Birr for the construction of the dam, being financed locally, during the current Ethiopian fiscal year through various fundraising programs. 800 million Birr was raised so far, he said.
In addition to selling of bonds, the public is extending its contribution through the renaissance trophy that has been travelling across the country.
The trophy is now in the regional state of SNNP. More than 305 million Birr was raised from three zones where the trophy has travelled so far since 8 December 2016 when the trophy entered the regional state, the Head said.
The public has contributed 9.4 billion Birr for the construction of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam since construction was launched.
