Mekele May 31/2016 Trial production of engines has been launched at the Mekelle engine manufacturing plant, disclosed Major Assefa Yohannes, General Manager of the Ethiopian Power Engineering Industry.
The Mekelle plant has the capacity to manufacture light, medium and heavy engines.
Major Assefa said the engine plant is designed to supply 20 thousand different engine types to local and foreign markets.
Locally manufactured engines offer an alternative source of power to the transportation sector, the general manager said.
Alongside engines, the factory manufactures light generators and water pumps with further plans to fabricate jet aircraft engines.
The new plant also serves as an important training and research platform and exchange of technologies as well as massive job creating site.
It offers renovation services for old engines, and manufacturing of radiators is imminent with expansion work ongoing.
Some youth working at the plant said they feel privileged as the training they received at the plant led to their subsequent employment which enabled them to play share in national development.
The youth and some residents of Mekelle also said they are able to witness contributions of the army in development activities besides defending the nation.
Employees of the plant joined residents of Mekelle to observe the 25th anniversary of May 28 on Monday.
