Addis Ababa March 30/2016 The Government Communication Affairs Office (GCAO) said the Great Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) has helped to advance national consensus among Ethiopians.

Speaking at a panel organized in connection with the celebration of the fifth year anniversary of the dam, GCAO Minister Getachew Reda said all Ethiopians irrespective of origin, age and sex have contributed to the construction of the dam.

The dam in turn has contributed to the growth of savings culture of the public and demonstrated the capacity of the country to build other huge projects with local finance, Getachew added.

He further affirmed the commitment of the government to complete the project as per the schedule and urged all stakeholders to collaborate for the realization of the goal.

While presenting a research paper at the panel, Kotebe University College Lecturer Birhanu Belachew said on his part the dam will have significant social, economic, and political benefits to the country.

He also pointed out that it is a symbol of unity.

Such kind of mega projects would help the country to become a middle-income country by 2025, according to the lecturer.

According to Birhanu, Ethiopia has reportedly allocated 70 percent its budget for pro-poor activities in order to alleviate poverty.
