Axum April 13/2013 Various development projects are underway in Axum Town, Tigray State, which is a tourist destination, with 168 million Birr, Town Mayor, Abera Hailemariam said.
Abera said the projects are being carried out in collaboration with the town administration and the Ethiopian Sustainable Tourism Development Project.
He said the projects include, among others, cobblestone covering, construction of modern market centers, renovation of the ancient Church of St. Mary of Zion.
Axum Town, which is located 1,010 km north of Addis Ababa, dates back some 2,000 years to when it was the hub of the Axumite Empire.
Nine of Ethiopia’s heritages are inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. The Axum Obelisks are part of the heritages.
