Construction, expansion of renewable energy sources underway

  Addis Ababa March 23/2013 Construction and expansion of renewable energy sources is underway with 45 billion Birr in the country, the Ministry of Water and Energy said. Water and Energy State Minister Wondimu Tekle said the country is undertaking various activities in renewable energy sector. Wondimu said Ethiopia has potential to generate 45,000 MW electric power from water. He said the country has also potential to generate 1.3 million MW electric power from wind and 7000MW from geothermal. The Minister said the country is generating over 2100MW electric power at present and efforts are underway to generate 10,000MW electric power during the Growth and Transformation Plan period. He said activities are underway to expand electricity supply in East Africa. Maintenance of power transmission and distribution lines is underway side by side construction of big electric power plants, according a magazine published by the Ministry in connection with the World Water Day 2013.
