HoF D/Speaker: environmental protection key towards dev’t

  Adama March 01/2013 Deputy Speaker of the House of Federation (HoF) Muhammed Reshid stressed the need for all citizens to actively participate in environmental protection, which is key towards sustainable economic development. Speaking at the opening of a two-day relevant forum in Adama Town, Oromia State on Friday, Muhammed said the government has put in place sound policies to enable the country build climate resilient green economy. The public are also undertaking commendable activities in the efforts to restore natural resources in an integrated manner , he said, adding, promising results are being registered since the last two years in this regard. The Deputy Speaker said the public are striving to restore forests and undertake soil and water conservation activities to build green economy and bring about improvement in the agriculture sector, which is the pillar of the country’s development. Director-General of the Ethiopian Environmental Protection Authority, Dr. Tewoldeberhan GebreEgziabher on his part said the country has given prime attention to building climate resilient green economy at low cost. Dr. Tewoldeberhan said the government has allocated 2 per cent of the country's total budget for implementation of activities to build climate resilient green economy. Chairperson of Natural Resource Development and Conservation Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples' Representatives, Dr. Kebede Kanchula on the occasion said encouraging soil and water conservation activities are underway in all parts of the country in collaboration with the Agency and regional agriculture bureaus.
