South constructs nearly 19km cobblestone roads

  Hawassa February 26/2013 Close to 19km cobblestone roads was constructed in South Ethiopia Peoples' State with over 52 million Birr during the first half of the current Ethiopian budget year, the regional trade, industry and urban development office said. Government communication affairs work process owner with the bureau, Abebe Dengamo told ENA that the roads were constructed in 22 towns in 14 zones and four special woredas of the state. Abebe said municipalities in the state, the regional government and the World Bank covered the cost for construction of the roads. Construction of the roads created more than 9,000 jobs for youth. Some 3,000 of the beneficiaries are females. He said the bureau has also undertaken various infrastructure development activities including construction of flood canals, installation of lampposts and water pipelines, among others. The State had undertaken construction of 59km cobblestone roads with over 146 million Birr last year, Abebe said, adding, construction of the road created more than 26,000 jobs.
