TPLF celebrates 38th founding anniversary

  Mekele February 18/2013 The 38th founding anniversary of the Tigrayan People's Liberation Front (TPLF) was celebrated in Mekelle Town of Tigray State on Monday. Tens of thousands of residents of the town and its environs took to the streets to celebrate the 38th anniversary of the TPLF, one of the four member parties of the ruling party Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF). Speaking on the occasion Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn said TPLF is known for its engagement in bitter struggle against the Derg regime as well as for the support it provided to other groups with similar objectives. Hailemariam, who is also Chairman of the EPRDF, said throughout the struggle TPLF had been providing support to other groups , which had been fighting for freedom of the people of Ethiopia. Since the downfall of the Derg in 1991, TPLF has been engaged in various developmental activities, which benefited the Tigrayan as well as the Ethiopian people, he said. Hailemariam said the founding of TPLF back in 1969 EC is considered as a base for the establishment of the current democratic system in the country. Tigray State Chief, Abay Woldu on his part said the support from the Tigrayan people helped TPLF to oust the Derg regime. Abay, who is also Chairperson of the TPLF said that the people of Tigray are now engaged in implementing the development endeavors of the government to achieve the visions of the late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. He said the people in collaboration with nations , nationalities and peoples of Ethiopia will strive to enable the country get rid of poverty.
