Goba February 17/2013 More than 9,000 pastoralists are engaged in irrigation development in Medewelabo Woreda, Bale Zone of Oromia State during the current dry season, the woreda pastoralists community development affairs office said.
Office Head, Ansha Logita told ENA that the pastoralists are cultivating vegetables on 4800 hectares land by harnessing rivers and using ground water.
Ansha said 90 water pumping machines are also distributed among the pastoralists at fair price to enable them become successful in their activities.
Pastoralists engaged in irrigation development have managed to improve their livelihoods.
More than 450,000 quintals output is expected to be harvested from the area of land being developed in the first round irrigation development in the woreda.
Over 280,000 quintals output was harvested from an area of over 4000 hectares land developed through irrigation last year in the woreda, Ansha said.
