Zone secures 6 mln. Birr from tourism

  Wolkite February 09/2013 Over six million Birr revenue was secured from tourism development in Gurage Zone, South Ethiopia Peoples' State in 2004EC budget year, the zonal culture and tourism and government communication affairs department said. The department told ENA that there are a number of natural, historical and cultural attractions in the zone including the Stelae of Tiya, the Gibe National Park, ancient monasteries, churches, mosques, caves as well as hot springs are some of the attractions. The Tiya site, which is inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, contains monuments including carved stelae. The Gibe National Park covers an area of 360sqkm. It is a place with magnificent gorges and rivers. The Park is home for different wild animals and birds. Two ancient caves and heritages are unearthed in Ezha Woreda of the Zone, the department said, adding, the number of domestic and foreign tourists visiting attractions in the zone is increasing from time to time. Nine of Ethiopia’s heritages are inscribed by UNESCO as world heritages.
