Bahir Dar February 04/2013 More than 12,600 farmers in Bure Woreda, West Gojjam Zone of Amhara State have prepared 420,000 cubic meters compost, the woreda agriculture office said.
Soil fertility expert with the office, Yeshambel Asmamaw told ENA that the compost enables the farmers to save over 29 million Birr, which could be spent on purchase of manufactured fertilizers.
He said the compost will be used to develop 20,000 hectares land.
Farmers are showing increased interest in compost preparation, he said, adding, the amount exceeds by more than 71,000 cubic meters that of last year.
Farmers had prepared 348,775 cubic meters compost last year, which helped them to save over 24 million Birr, that could be spent on purchasing artificial fertilizers, he said.
