Ambo February 2/2013 Some 39,664 hectares land is being developed through irrigation in West Shoa Zone, Oromia State, the zonal agriculture development office said.
Office representative and natural resource utilization work process coordinator, Teshome Guta told ENA on Friday that 20,395 hectares of the stated area of land is already covered with vegetable and fruit seeds.
Teshome said more than 91,000 farmers are engaged in the irrigation development activity being carried out in 18 woredas of the zone.
A total of over three million quintals output is expected to be harvested from the area of land being developed through irrigation.
The area of land being developed through irrigation exceeds by 21,522 hectares, he said, adding, the amount of output estimated to be harvested also surpasses by 483,000 quintals that of last year
Farmers in the area are also undertaking natural resource conservation side by side the irrigation development.
