Addis Ababa January 16/2013 Addis Ababa University AAU has embarked on establishing Technology Business Incubation Center (AAU-TBIC) and Science and Technology Park as part of its effort to strengthen research and development activities as well as technology transfer.
Speaking at the opening of a workshop on establishment of the center here Wednesday, University Board Chairperson, Kassa Tekleberhan said establishment of the center and the park in line with the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP) of the country.
Kassa said the GTP comprises of several mega projects which are knowledge and technology intensive.
The projects require educated humanpower and technology input from universities and the center will address the requirements to a greater extent.
He said the ICT Park, which is being constructed on 200 hectares land with 45 million USD will contribute to investment activities in Ethiopia.
AAU President Dr. Admassu Tsegaye on his part said the center will mainly support and strengthen research works and create innovators.
Dr. Admassu on the occasion called on stakeholders to contribute share towards success of the center, which will launch pilot project at the end of the current Ethiopian budget year.
Research and technology transfer associate dean with Business and Economics college with the university, Dr. Fenta Mandefro on his part said the workshop is organized to get inputs from stakeholders and enrich the establishment document.
The missions of the AAU-TBIC include, among others, to be center of excellence for entrepreneurship development and center of commercialization for innovative technologies of the university.
It also aims to provide infrastructure, management assistance, finance, and support networks that enable new and emerging companies.
