Addis to Host Meeting of African Health Ministers

Addis Ababa January 14/2013 African Leadership for Child Survival - A Promise Renewed Meeting of African Health Ministers will be held here for three days beginning from Wednesday. In a joint statement they gave here on Monday, Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Director-General with the Ministry, Dr. Tewodros Bekele and the Ministry's Public Relation Head, Ahmed Emano said that Ethiopia is elected to host the meeting for its encouraging results registered in the health sector during the past couple of years. The officials said the country managed to reduce by 60 per cent the death of children below five years of age between the years 1990 and 2011. Out of 10,000 children, child mortality under five is now reduced to 88 in the country from the previous 217, they said. Health ministers drawn from 54 African countries and health professionals from different international institutions are expected to take part in the meeting. The meeting, which is a peer-to-peer effort led by Africans to accelerate progress on reducing child mortality through out the continent, will help countries share experiences.
