Assela October 13/2013 The Agriculture Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples' Representatives urged agriculture research institutes to enhance activities to help farmers utilize modern technologies with a view to ensure sustainable development.
While visiting the Kulumsa Agriculture Research institute in Oromia State, Committee Chairperson, Mohamed Abdosh said research institutes need to promote modern technologies with a bid to meet the ever increasing demands of farmers.
Researches conducted in the agriculture sector are helping the country to increase production and productivity, he added.
Institute Director-General, Solomon Balcha on his part said the institution is coordinating research projects being conducted in East Africa towards improving wheat and malt seed as well as prevent wheat diseases.
He said the institution has managed to distribute a number of varieties of wheat, barley, malt, beans and field pea, among farmers over the past years.
