Gedeo September 21/2013 Irrigation development will be strengthened to increase coffee production in Gedeo Zone, South Ethiopia Peoples' State during the current Ethiopian budget year, the zonal agriculture department said.
Speaking at a relevant training organized for 500 experts drawn from six woredas of the zone, Department Deputy Head, Tessema Jigso said efforts will be exerted to increase productivity through making use of rivers and springs for irrigation purpose.
Currently, close to 14 million coffee seedlings are prepared in the zone, Tessema, who is also coordinator of coffee and tea development work process said, adding, irrigation development will contribute in the efforts to increase productivity.
Zonal natural resource and environmental conservation office head, Kebede Gemeda on his part said over 3400 hectares land will be developed through irrigation during the reported period.
Kebede said 1300 hectares land was developed through irrigation last year.
Awareness raising activities on increasing productivity through utilizing water resources were carried out during the last two years for the same purpose, according to zonal crop development work process coordinator Shimelis Tadesse.
