Addis Ababa August 29/2013 The Ministry of Agriculture said it has been preparing a livestock master plan with a bid to maximize the benefit from livestock resource.
Speaking in the Ethiopian Society of Animal Production (ESAP) 21st annual meeting held in Addis Ababa on Wednesday, State Minister for Livestock, Dr Gebregziabher Gebreyohannes said the master plan will help to increase the contribution of livestock to the economy.
Despite its huge livestock resource, Ethiopia did not benefit from the source, he said.
The livestock master plan is expected to help the country ensure food security and attract investment in the sector.
He said the master plan is being prepared in collaboration with International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
ASAP President, Dr. Getachew Gebru on his part said the master plan will serve as a road map for the development of the livestock sector.
He said the meeting will discuss on value chains approaches as they are a path for development in the pursuit to bring a dynamic and growing livestock sector that will have a profound impact on the economy.
Papers on livestock value chain approaches will be presented during the three-day meeting, he said.
