Addis Ababa August 26/ 2013 African countries need to ensure safety and security of radiation and nuclear technologies with a view to use them to encourage investment and enhance development, the Ministry of Science and Technology said.
While opening training for regulators, the Minister Demitu Hambissa said countries need to ensure radiation sources safety and security to use those technologies for boosting investment, access to medicine, food security and enhance the overall development.
She said clear policy and strategy coupled with effective regulatory system and implementation capacity will enable African countries to exploit nuclear technology for development.
Ethiopian Radiation Protection Authority Director General, Abdulrezak Oumer Jeju on his part said nuclear and other radiation source regulators play vital role in the delivery of radiation sources safety and security.
He said Africa needs effective regulators to set appropriate standards, monitor the industry and take action if the industry failed to meet the standard.
Some 24 nuclear and other radiation source regulators drawn from 18 African countries are taking part in the month long training.
