Meles says IGAD agrees to ensure sustainable peace in Sudan
Addis Ababa, March 10, 2010 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi said the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has agreed to ensure sustainable peace in Sudan.

Meles was speaking on Tuesday at the closing of the 14th Extraordinary Summit of the IGAD on the Sudan Peace Process held in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Premier, who is also current Chairperson of IGAD, said IGAD would provide full support to the implementation of the Sudanese Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

Meles said the parties, which signed the agreement, play crucial role in the implementation of the agreement. IGAD should also play key role to the same purpose.

He said foreign affairs ministers of IGAD member countries have diplomatic responsibility to enable all parties to establish common belief.

Meles also asked all parties to the Sudanese Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) to honor their part for the good future of the people of the Sudan and for the sake of peace in the entire horn of Africa.

The decision made by the Summit has significant contribution in ensuring sustainable peace, stability and wellbeing of the people of Sudan, he said, adding, the Summit was successful.

Sudan’s 1st Vice President and President of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir noted that the CPA’s major success is bringing about peace and stability in the Sudan.

He said the right for self-determination by the people of Southern Sudan would be respected.

Sudanese 2nd Vice-President, Ali Osman Taha, on his part expressed belief that the referendum will strengthen unity of Sudan.

President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya and also representatives of regional and international organizations said on the occasion that votes of the people should be respected, according to the Ethiopian Radio and Television Agency.
