146th World Red Cross, Red Crescent Day marked here
Addis Ababa, May 8, 2009 (Addis Ababa) -

The 146th World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day celebrated here on Friday under the theme "Our World Your Move".

Speaking at the celebration, Representative of Mayor of the Addis Ababa City Administration, Tadesse Banti said since its establishment, the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has been saving the lives of several people regardless of ethnicity, sex, religion and political affiliation.

Besides its multifaceted humanitarian activities the Addis Ababa Branch Office of the Ethiopian Red Cross Society (ERCS) has also been working closely with the Ethiopian government in its endeavor to expand health, development and social services in the city.

The representative reaffirmed the administration's commitment toward supporting the humanitarian activities of the society.

He called up on the public to contribute its share toward strengthening the humanitarian activities of the society.

Broad Chairperson of the Branch, Selome Taddese on her part said that the society has been providing 24-hour ambulance and first aid services to expectant mothers and street people.

Governmental and non-governmental organizations have been providing the necessary support for the society. She said the public should strive to support the activities of the society.

Awareness raising orientation on the activities of the society was presented as part of the event.

World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day is observed annually on May 8 to commemorate the birth anniversary of and pay tribute to Henry Dunant (1828-1910) who founded the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The day also celebrates the global humanitarian efforts of the National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Ethiopia marks the day for 74th time.
