Addis Ababa, February 24, 2009 (Addis Ababa) -Minister of Water Resources, Asfaw Dingamo said Rib Irrigation Development project launched in Ebinat Woreda of South Gondar Zone, Amahara State at a cost of over 1.1 billion Birr is being speeded up.The minister told ENA on Tuesday that the irrigation development project has a capacity of developing 20,000 hectares of land.
Up on completion after two years, the project is expected to benefit more than 20,000 farmers.The project would enable the farmers to harvest thrice a year.
Similarly, he said preparations are well in progress to launch the construction of a dam, which has a capacity of holding 270 million cubic meters in Megech area of the Zone.
The dam would enable farmers develop up to 8,000 hectares of land through irrigation.
The minister said utilizing irrigation land has a significant importance in the efforts being made to ensure food security in the nation.
The dams and various irrigation development projects being executed in the nation are becoming successful, he said.
Ethiopia has more than 3.75 million hectares of land favorable for irrigation.
