Premier inaugurates cardiac hospital, lays foundation stone for cardiac research centre
Addis Ababa, February 12, 2009 (Addis Ababa) - Prime Minister Meles Zenawi here on Thursday inaugurated Ethiopia's first ever Cardiac Hospital. The premier also laid foundation stone for construction of a cardiac research centre.

Prime Minister Meles on the occasion said individuals and humanitarian organizations are expected to contribute share towards success of the health sector as the issue should not be left to the government alone.

The premier lauded activities of director of the hospital Dr. Belay Abegaz and his colleagues for the efforts they exerted over the past 22 years to realize establishment of the hospital.

Meles also expressed gratitude to Chain of Hope's President and Founder, Professor Magdi Yacoub, for his support for establishment of the hospital. Meles also appreciated Ethiopia’s tycoon, Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi for his significant assistance for the construction of the hospital, deployment of necessary equipment and human power.

Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Ali Al Amoudi on his part said he would contribute support for construction of the research center, which would give service not only to Ethiopia but also to Africa as a whole.

Professor Magdi Yacoub said a number of people die due to heart diseases. Some 80 per cent of such problems prevails in African countries.

Professor Yacoub said the research center is significant to curb the problem not only in Ethiopia but also in Africa.

Dr. Belay on his part said inception of establishment of the hospital dates back to 30 years.

The hospital has already been providing treatment to cardiac patients.

Chain of Hope, a charity, which was founded in the United Kingdom in 1995, provides surgery for children in developing countries and assists with equipment and training for cardiac surgeons and other medical professionals.
