CBE earns record 1.3 billion Birr profit
Addis Ababa, February 12, 2009 (Addis Ababa) -The Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) disclosed that it has obtained a record high profit amounting to 1.3 billion Birr in six months alone.

In an exclusive interview with ENA on Thursday, CBE President Bekalu Zeleke said the profit secured by the bank during the reported period is an all-time high in its history.

The profit is greater than that of last year same period by 80 per cent.

CBE’s asset has also shown an accelerated growth over the last four years. Its asset which was below 20 billion Birr before 1998 Ethiopian fiscal year has more than doubled now reaching 55.1 billion Birr, according to Bekalu.

The increase in the bank’s profit and asset is attributed to the steadily growing economy of the nation in the past couple of years.

Referring to loaning he said the bank has granted a loan amounting to 6.1 billion Birr in the last six months exceeding that of last year same period by 3.2 billion Birr. The sum is also greater than that of the target by 2.7 billion Birr.

According to the president, the bank’s deposit which stands at 36 billion Birr last year has reached 42.8 billion Birr this year.

The president said the bank has begun to apply practically Business Process Reengineering (BPR) as of last December.

Publicizing the efficient service delivery to customers, enhancing the skill of the staff and expansion of information technology in the bank in a strengthened manner are the areas to be prioritized by the BPR, he said.

Established in 1942, CBE is currently providing service to more than two million regular customers through its 205 branch offices across the country.

The bank which is pioneer to introduce modern banking to the country has a working relation with 500 international banks.
