Hawassa, December 28, 2009 (Hawassa) - Six political parties in South Ethiopia Peoples’ State have begun submitting candidates that contest in the coming national elections to be held in May 2010, as per the schedule of the National Electoral Board of Ethiopia (NEBE), the state’s election office said.The registration of contesting candidates for all political parties will be held between 25 Dec. 2009 and 03 Jan. 2010, state’s election office head with NEBE, Abreham Gedobo told ENA on Monday.
Accordingly, contesting political parties that include South Ethiopia Peoples’ Democratic Movement (SEPDM), Ethiopian Democratic Party-Medhin, South Ethiopia People Democratic Unity, Sidama People Liberation Movement, Wolaita People Democratic Front, and All Ethiopians Unity Organization (AEUO) have begun submitting their respective candidates.
According to the head, every contesting political party has a right to field one candidate for a seat in the House Peoples’ Representatives and three candidates for seats of regional councils.
Some 40,695 election observers have been elected to be deployed in the various polling stations established in the region, he said, adding election coordinators are receiving relevant training.
Registration of voters will be held between 09 Jan. 2010 and 17 Feb 2010 at every polling stations of the region, he added.
