Assosa, May 16, 2008 (Assosa) - The Benishangul Gumuz State Administrative Council decided on Friday to strip off the legal immunity of seven council members including the deputy chief of the regional government.Holding the 2nd extraordinary conference of its third term, the council decided to withdraw the legal immunity of the members after council discovered that the members were working with anti-peace forces that are trying to impede the on-going development, good-governance, and democratic programs of the region.
The council also unanimously agreed for urgent investigation on the disrupting activities of the seven council members, who rally behind the anti-peace forces disregarding their pledges to voters.
Chief of the regional government, Yaregal Aysheshim said on the occasion tangible evidences were found that the seven members supported the illegal moves of anti peace elements who are striving to obstruct the hamper the harmony and tranquility of the people, nations, and nationalities living in the region.
Yaregal said the regional government in collaboration with the public would intensify efforts in exposing and bring the anti peace forces and supporters to justice.
The chief called upon the members of the regional council to work together with the public in foiling the disruptive agenda of the anti peace forces besides respecting pledges made to the electorates.
