Addis Ababa, May 16, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Ethiopia is undertaking wide-ranging activities to adopt the UN Convention on People with Disabilities, the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs said.Speaking at a national workshop on disabilities, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Hasen Abdella said Ethiopia is among the first signatories of the convention, signifying nation’s deep interest in ensuring the right and dignity of people with disabilities.
Commissioner of the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, Ambassador Kassa G/Hiwot on his part said the Ethiopia, national, and international civic society organizations have been undertaking lots of activities towards the success of the convention.
Efforts are in progress to incorporate the cause of the disabled in the national development and poverty reduction program, he said, adding a steering committee is already set up for the same cause.
The workshop, which confers on issues of human rights and persons with disabilities in order to come up with suggestions of action priorities, attracted relevant stakeholders, government institutions, National Human Rights Institutions and civil Society Organizations.
The workshop is organized by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission in collaboration with the UN Human Rights Regional Office for East Africa.
