Addis Ababa, May 14, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The International Museum Day would be marked here on Sunday for sixth time in Ethiopia under a theme “Museums as Agents of Social Change and Development”, the National Museum of Ethiopia said.Manager of the Museum, Mamitu Yilma told a press conference here on Wednesday that the Day would be observed with various assortments across the nation.
She said this year's celebration is unique in that it would coincide with the celebration of the Ethiopian Millennium.
Panel discussion on relevant issues would be held and historical places would also be visited as part of the celebration.
The visit is expected to help raise the awareness of the society about the country's historical places, according to the Manager.
The day would be marked in collaboration with the Ethiopian Millennium Festival National Secretariat.
International Museum Day has been celebrated all over the world since 1977. Each year, a theme is decided on by the Advisory Committee.
The event provides the opportunity for museum professionals to meet the public and alert them to the challenges that museums face if they are to be as in the International Council of Museums (ICOM), definition of museums "an institution in the service of society and of its development".
