Addis Ababa, May 12, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The International Islamic Relief Organization (IIRO) lauded the ongoing road expansion and construction in the City of Addis Ababa. The organization has donated more than 118,000 Birr in support for the construction of Awelia road project in Kolfe-Keraniyo Sub-City here in the metropolis.
IIRO Country Representative, Sheik Saleh Al-Zebani told ENA on Monday that as the road development sector is central for the development of a nation, the organization is keen to back such endeavor.
He said as it is hard for the government to execute development activities alone, NGOs and the public at large should launch concerted efforts to help the government achieve its plans.
Accordingly, he said IIRO is committed to support the government’s endeavor to address the basic problems of the society.
The organization has been executing humanitarian activities focusing on health, education particularly on providing care and support to orphans with an annual running budget of 13 million Birr.
The Ethiopian government has been providing all the necessary support to facilitate the activities of the organization, according to the Country Representative.
Engineer Hailu Gebremariam, Consultant of the Committee established by residents of the area for the construction of the road project said the public has been actively engaged in the development activities of its environs.
He said the Committee has been undertaking preliminary activities such as conducting study and mobilizing resources for the construction of the asphalt alley through its own initiation.
The asphalt alley to be launched in the beginning of next Ethiopian year is expected to cost around 1.6 million Birr.
The Addis Ababa Roads Authority would provide half a million Birr worth machineries for the project, he said.
