Ethiopia secures over 60 mln USD from export of precious metals
Addis Ababa, May 11, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Ministry of Mines and Energy said the nation secured over 60 million USD from export of precious metals over the past nine months.

Public relations service head with the ministry, Sofia Mohammed said various activities were undertaken in the country to coordinate the production, transport and sell of the metals.

She said the amount secured from the export of such metals during the reported period has significantly increased compared to that of the previous years.

The stated sum was obtained from gold, Tantalum, Platinum and other precious metals legally exported through the national bank.

Nearly 2,000-kg of gold and over 500-kg of silver produced by Midroc Gold Mine Plc were sold during the reported period.

Additional 700-kg of gold supplied by legal business persons was also sold during the reported period through the bank.

The efforts undertaken to enable such individuals engage in legal export helped the nation to benefit from the sector .

The ministry has distributed mining tools to people engaged in cultural mining in seven regions, she said.
