Addis Ababa, May 10, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on Thursday urged all countries across the world to strive to overcome the food crisis, Xinhua reported from Mexico. During an interview on the sidelines of the First International Congress of Bio-fuel in western Guadalajara city, FAO's representative in Mexico, Norman Bellino, called on the international community to give priority to the development of agriculture.
It is necessary to raise agricultural productivity with modern technologies, research, training and exemptions as well as a strong political will to help the poor, Bellino said.
The representative considered the current rise in food prices to be the consequence of the change of direction in agriculture. He warned that the world will face "red lights" as the poor countries do not have the necessary means to buy basic articles of consumption, and recommended greater investment in agriculture.
