16th CAA championship officially opened
Addis Ababa, April 30, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The 16th CAA championship was officially opened here late on Wednesday at Addis Ababa Stadium in the presence of prominent personalities and other dignitaries.

The event was decorated by mass arts of children and colorful cultural dances of Ethiopian nations and nationalities and a scene that commemorates athletic legend, Aebeb Bikila.

Participating African nation teams passed in parade across the stadium with their flags hoisted up that add color to the event.

Speaking at the even, Organizing Committee President Hailemariam Dessalegn said the event is unique in that it is held at the homeland of Abebe Bikila and a seat African nations organization, African Union.

Hailemariam said what makes the event special is that it is held in the Ethiopiaian soil at a time when the nation is celebrating its millennium, which is also considered as an African millennium

Hailemarim called up on the athletes to make the championship peaceful and symbolic.

Confederation of African Athletics President Hamad Kalkaba Malboum expressed appreciation to the Ethiopian government for its all rounded support to the event, which he said, is successful.

He also commended the support of IAAF for the successful organization of the tournament.

The first ever CAA African Athletics Hall of Fame Gala was held in Addis Ababa late on Tuesday colorfully in the presence of athletics legends across the continent and a list of prominent personalities.
