Commission striving to prevent human rights violation
Addis Ababa, March 27, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission said it has been working in collaboration with concerned bodies in the efforts to prevent human rights violation.

The commission has carried out various activities aimed at raising the awareness of the public on human rights during the past two years.

Commissioner Ambassador Kassa Gebrehiwot said on Thursday that the commission has so far distributed over 60,000 pocket size books on human rights to the public as part of the awareness raising activities. The books are prepared in three languages.

Efforts were carried out to organize radio and television programs and seminars to raise the awareness of the public on human rights.

A study was conducted to expand education on human rights to primary schools with a view to familiarizing the issue at grassroots level.

The commission has been investigating complaints related to human rights violation.

Preparations are underway to launch branch offices across the country. The offices would be opened in selected regions in the near future.

The commission has begun working closely with the government, local NGOs, international associations and organizations, as well as the ministry of foreign affairs concerning matters related to human rights.
