Gender equality, women's empowerment top on government’s agenda : House Speaker.
Addis Ababa, March 9, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Speaker of the House of Peoples and Representatives (HPR), Ambassador Teshome Toga said the incumbent government has attached due attention to the issues of democracy and human rights, especially to gender equality and women's empowerment.

Addressing a workshop organized in connection with this year's International Women’s Day on Sunday, Ambassador Teshome Toga said the government has designed and is implementing various legal frameworks, policies and strategies, structures and packages aimed at ensuring the constitutional rights of women.

The workshop brought together Women members of the Parliament and members of the Womens Affairs Standing Committee.

The role of women themselves is crucial in ensuring active participation of women in development, good governance and the democratization process, he said.

The Speaker said the legal and institutional measures Ethiopia took towards ensuring gender equality are exemplary.

Ambassador Teshome cited the success female farmers and pastoralists are scoring by actively involving in rural development.

He also said that women should get organized towards actively taking part and protecting their right and benefits in the development and good governance packages.

The speaker on the occasion called up on the entire public to exert utmost effort to speed up development and to ensure Ethiopia's renaissance.

Deputy Government Chief Whip at the HPR, Nestanet Asfaw and State Minister of Women Affairs, Ubah Mohammed presented papers on the history of Ethiopian women farmers and the life and challenges of the women pastoralists, respectively.

Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Women Affairs Standing Committee with HPR and Women MPs organized the daylong workshop.
