Addis Ababa, March 7, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - The Ministry of Information said the new Ethiopian millennium will be a time of great promise for women as they will benefit from the renaissance of the country with their own active participation. In its weekly statement on Friday, the Ministry said the government has taken several measures to enable Ethiopian women enjoy their rights.
As a result of various positive measures taken by the government, women are currently organized under several small-scale businesses and cooperatives. They are also organized under various gender-based and professional associations to protect their rights.
The participation of women in the education sector at all levels has increased dramatically, it said. "Needless to state that the political participation of women at the federal, regional, woreda and kebele levels has also increased significantly."
Nevertheless, due to age-old prejudices against them, they are faced with wide-ranging challenges. The vital strategy to alleviate challenges is to educate the society regarding the principles of democracy and human rights.
Even though, attitudinal changes have not been attained to the desired level, awareness is being created among many members of the society. Conditions are being observed that are indicative of the fact that the issue has attracted a lot of attention.
As regards those who trespass the law, those who violate women’s rights are being brought to the courts of law for speedy trial and proper punishment. Yet, considering the wide scope of the problem, a more effective and integrated work is expected of the judiciary.
