"Ethiopia is a land of lots of hope" : WB vice president
Addis Ababa, June 17, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Vice President and Chief Economist of the World Bank (WB) Jusfin Liu said Ethiopia is in the right direction in the fight against poverty. But there is still a need to enhance production capacity of agricultural sector to attain food security.

The vice president paid a four-day visits to Ethiopia during which he looks at the operations of companies engaged in export sector.

Briefing journalists here on Tuesday on the conclusion of his visits, Liu said there are a lot of positive changes in Ethiopia.The link between market-technology is in the right direction.

“The government is very committed. It has a vision and a capacity in implementing all kinds of social, economic polices,” the vice president said.

The people of Ethiopia have also strong internal desire to bring about prosperity.

According to Liu Ethiopia should also make use of its large domestic market as it has close to 80 million population.

Furthermore, the large number of population will contribute a lot to expand labor intensive agricultural and industrial activities.

“Although there are a lot of challenges in Ethiopia,” the vise president said, “I think it is possible to overcome them. Ethiopia is a land of hope.”

The vice president visited floriculture farms, leather and leather industries and others export oriented industries.
