Axum, January 29, 2008 (Axum) - Addis Drug Factory, located in Adigrat Town of Tigray State, launched production of Coartem, a new anti-malaria drug, company manager said.

Speaking at the launching ceremony of company’s new wholesale store at Mekele on Sunday, factory Deputy Manager, Yosef Gebre'egziabeher said the factory is producing quality certified Coartem backing the fight against the pandemic in the country.

Drugs Administration and Control Authority (DACA) had approved the drug for effectiveness.

The factory is important in reducing malaria deaths in Ethiopia and in saving foreign currency to the country, he said.

The input for the production of the drug is readily available in Ethiopia, with the herb found in abundence in Amhara, Benishangul and Tigray states, he said.

Currently, the factory is working with the Ministry of Health and other organizations to shortly distribute the drugs to benefitiaries.

The factory was established 11 years ago with a 120-million birr capital and currently produces 98 drug types.
