Nigeria to send 500 soldiers to Somalia
Addis Ababa, January 15, 2008 (Addis Ababa) - Public Relations Director with Nigerian Army, Brig.-Gen. Solomon Giwa-Amu said that the Nigerian Army will (at any moment) send about 500 soldiers to Somalia under the AU peacekeeping mission, Journal Chretien, a website reported.

Giwa-Amu, who is in Monrovia, Liberia for the decoration of Nigerian soldiers serving in that country, told journalists on Sunday that the battalion was on standby in Nigeria waiting further directives on its deployment.

According to the general, Nigeria has 2,400 troops comprising all ranks in Darfur, Western Sudan under the UN Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) and another 2,000 troops in Liberia participating under the UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

He said that Nigeria was currently participating in eight UN peacekeeping missions across the globe, including Liberia, Sudan, Burundi, Western Sahara, Sierra Leone, Cote D’ Ivoire, Guinea and Ethiopia.
